Open the Command Prompt with admin rights and type these two commands one at a time. The SFC scan will scan for corrupt system files and try to repair it. The DISM command will service the Windows image and repair irregularities with the system files.
Select Update driver here and follow on-screen instructions.
Update your graphics card drivers by right-clicking on it. Open the Device Manager and look for Display Adaptors. If you have downloaded an icon pack from the web, you can browse to the folder and select that instead of going with the default options which are not so great, to be frank. Under the Shortcut tab, click on Change Icon to begin. You can also use the Alt+Enter shortcut when the app is selected. To do so, right-click on the app and select Properties. In the case of apps, you can change the icon manually. If that doesn’t work, try the Restore Default button on the same screen. Select the item for which you are not seeing the icon and click on Change Icon here to replace it. Under Themes, scroll to the bottom to select Desktop icon settings. Press Windows key+I to Open it and click on Personalization. These are for default desktop icons like Recycle bin and so on.
Windows 10 comes with icon settings that you can tweak under Settings. You may also try installing it from the source site directly instead of using the Windows Store. Maybe, the error is specific to some apps instead of being system wide? Updating apps didn’t work, did it? Try uninstalling the app and then reinstalling it from the Windows Store. Reinstall AppsĬan you see icons for some apps and not for others. If the problem persists, you will have to find an alternative or contact Google Drive support staff. If so, download a fresh copy of the app and try installing it again. Several users have reported that uninstalling Google Drive from their computer helped resolve the issue. When everything is updated, reboot your PC once and check if the icons reappear. If not, I would suggest you check manually once. Mostly, you will see a number there if updates are found. Open Windows Store, click on Download, and updates icon on the upper right. Since this error is related to app icons, I would recommend updating apps to see if that resolves the missing or blank icons error. Open Settings and click on Update & Security. You know that’s the first thing we suggest. The step will restore the desktop shortcut icons to their lawfully icons.Let’s begin. Remove the Read Only attribute of IconCache.db file, and the icons cache will be refreshed. Create a new file named IconCache.db, and set it to Read Only attribute in Properties (if the file is not read only, the cache won’t be reset). Once inside the folder, delete IconCache.db. To see the hidden AppData folder, go to Organize -> Folder and Search Options -> View tab, and select Show hidden files, folders and drives, and uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended). To refresh and reset the icons cache, go to the following folder:
There are many system management software utilities that may reset the icon cache db automatically, but here’s how to reset the icon cache db manually. In order to fix the problem where shortcut icons turn to blank icon, try to refresh or rebuild the cache database for icons. For example, in Windows 7 pre-RC release, a network connection or broadband connection shortcut’s icon placed on desktop by user manually will go haywire and turn into blank default icon if there is another third-party program places an icon on desktop later. The bug happens whenever there is corruption in icon cache database. It’s as if the icon for the shortcut has been removed or unassigned, and been replaced with default blank icon in white. Once in a while, the shortcut icons on the Windows desktop may suddenly been changed or became blank or ‘white paper’ icon, where supposedly the icons should be colorful and customized in style and color.
